Pierre Damas Bel dreamed of becoming a doctor, but his family says losing TPS left him overwhelmed by immigration uncertainty.

Pierre Damas Bel immigrated to the United States from Haiti to build a future. At 20, he had graduated with honors, joined JROTC and dreamed of becoming a doctor. Then he lost his Temporary Protected Status – and, his family says, his hope.

Bel died Monday (Aug. 31) after being struck by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 in Clark County, Ohio. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, he had parked his car on the shoulder, got out and entered the westbound lanes. The truck driver was not injured.

His family says his death was a suicide, according to The Washington Post. They believe the loss of his immigration protections played a significant role in his decision.
