When the calendar turns to late August and early September in the South, one common uniter springs eternal: football.

In Ocean Springs, football and a magnetic personality endeared Nolan Wells to the community before he ventured on to play at Southwest Mississippi Community College. It was on those fields where people got to know him as a star athlete. But after a summer in which his death has become a touchpoint for the community, two football fields offered two different memorials for him.
