I don’t care if I have a hundred more lives in this world; every life I’d still choose to be a Black woman. But being a Black woman is not for the faint of heart. Black women face several major health threats at higher rates, at younger ages, or with worse outcomes than many other groups. Biology can influence risk, but it is only part of the picture. Delayed diagnoses, unequal access to high-quality care, chronic stress, environmental conditions and medical bias can also affect outcomes.

There is no single official ranking of the “top five” diseases for Black women. However, the following conditions stand out because of their prevalence, severity or disproportionate impact.

1. Heart Disease

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among American women. More than 60 million women in the United States are living with some form of cardiovascular disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
