Black Excellence On Display

This past Saturday marked the highly anticipated grand opening of Kitchen + Kocktails, a premier dining destination founded by acclaimed restaurateur Kevin Kelley. In more than two decades of living in South Florida, few Black-owned business openings have generated this level of excitement, anticipation, and community pride. By any standard, the debut of Kitchen + Kocktails stands as one of the most significant Black business launches the region has witnessed in recent memory.

The restaurant’s arrival is notable not only for its cultural impact but also for its economic scale. It is rare for a Black-owned enterprise with a  worth of 100 million dollars to establish roots in South Florida while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for 100 people. That level of investment signals confidence, vision, and a long-term commitment to the community that deserves recognition and support.

Having lived in Washington, D.C., and New York City, cities known for thriving and sophisticated Black-owned business ecosystems, I have seen firsthand what sustained patronage can accomplish. South Florida now has an opportunity to cultivate that same level of success locally. Kitchen + Kocktails represents more than a restaurant; it is a statement of excellence, ambition, and Black economic power.

This is a personal appeal to the broader South Florida community—Black, Latino, and white alike—to actively support this establishment. For residents over 40 who appreciate elevated dining, live music, and refined social spaces, there are limited venues we can truly call our own. Kitchen + Kocktails fills that void, offering a grown-and-sexy atmosphere rooted in culture, quality, and community.

As my good friend Bill Diggs aptly put it, “I am so starved, I have no choice but to support this establishment.” His words reflect a shared sentiment felt by many who have been waiting for a space that speaks directly to our tastes and experiences.

As with any new venture, patience and understanding are essential. Success is not built overnight—it is sustained through loyalty, grace, and collective commitment. Kitchen + Kocktails has set the bar high. Now, it is up to the community to help ensure it thrives.
Supporting this restaurant is not just about dining out; it is about investing in a legacy.

In addition, heartfelt congratulations are extended to one of my closest friends, Dale Caldwell, who today will be sworn in as lieutenant governor of the great state of New Jersey. His ascension to one of the highest offices in the state represents a truly historic and inspiring achievement, underscored by decades of disciplined leadership, unwavering integrity and an unrelenting commitment to public service.

Dale’s journey has been defined by resilience, focus and purpose. Through every challenge, he has remained steadfast, keeping his head high and his eyes firmly on the prize, never wavering from his mission to lead with honor and principle. His career reflects the highest ideals of service—thoughtful governance, community-centered leadership and a rare ability to unite people across differences.Today’s swearing-in is more than a personal milestone; it is a powerful moment for New Jersey and a testament to what consistent excellence and character can achieve. It is both a privilege and an honor to call Dale Caldwell not only a trusted leader, but a friend and a brother. Congratulations and well done!
