Building Miami’s future through hospitality education and leadership

In Greater Miami and Miami Beach, tourism is more than an industry — it is one of the driving forces behind the community’s economic vitality, cultural identity and global reputation. Behind every visitor experience, are thousands of dedicated professionals who help make Miami one of the world’s most dynamic destinations. Helping to cultivate that workforce is the mission of the Visitor Industry Council (VIC), powered by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB).

VIC serves as a bridge between the hospitality and tourism industry and future leaders who will shape it. Through education, mentoring, advocacy and career exposure, the organization is committed to strengthening the pipeline of talent entering the visitor industry while helping individuals understand incredible opportunities available within this evolving field.

Hospitality and tourism are often viewed through the lens of hotels and vacations, which is true, but the industry has so many layers. It encompasses event management, arts and culture, culinary tourism, aviation, cruise operations, sports tourism, destination marketing, public relations, multicultural tourism, entertainment production, transportation, sustainability, technology and entrepreneurship. In a destination as globally connected and culturally rich as Miami, these career pathways are especially significant.

VIC recognizes that creating a strong hospitality workforce begins with education. Many young people may not initially realize that their passions for business, communications, technology, culture or community engagement can lead to meaningful careers in tourism. VIC initiatives help connect students and emerging professionals with industry leaders who can provide guidance and real-world insight into possibilities available within the visitor economy.

Since its founding, the strategic partnership between VIC and GMCVB has raised more than $3.3 million, positively impacted over 10,000 students through workshops, school visitation and conferences, and awarded more than 500 scholarships—contributing to the growth of the tourism sector and the overall economic vitality of the industry.

Mentorship also remains a cornerstone, shaping confidence, leadership skills and long-term career growth. Advocacy is equally important. The hospitality and tourism industry supports thousands of jobs throughout Miami-Dade County and generates economic impact that benefits local businesses, neighborhoods and cultural institutions. VIC helps elevate awareness about the importance of tourism as a viable career path while championing workforce development initiatives that prepare the next generation for success.

VIC is ultimately about investing in people. It is about creating access, opening doors and ensuring that the next generation of hospitality professionals is equipped to lead with innovation, creativity and excellence. As tourism continues to evolve, organizations like VIC play a critical role in ensuring that Miami remains not only a premier destination for visitors, but also a place where careers are built, leaders are developed and opportunities continue to thrive for generations to come.
