Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert, III is running for Florida’s 24th Congressional District.
Gilbert has filed his statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
“I’m running to put people first, to fight for the things that actually make life better for working families, and to make sure this community continues to have a partner in Congress,” said Gilbert in a press release.
“I grew up here. I went to school here. I served here. And every step of that journey is the reason I’m running. Families in South Florida are working harder than ever and still falling behind — gas costs more, rent eats up half a paycheck, and Washington keeps spending their money on everything except them.”
Gilbert, who launched his website olivergilbert.vote, is set to make a formal public announcement on Sunday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Miami Gardens. He will resign his seat on the County Commission effective Jan. 3, 2027.
Gilbert has represented District 1 since 2020 and has served as chairman of the board of County Commissioners. Prior to this, he served two terms as mayor of Miami Gardens.
Gilbert joins Rudolph Moise and Christine Alexandria Sanon-Jules, formerly Christine Alexandria Olivo, who have already announced their candidacy for the 24th District.
Moise switched from the race in Florida’s 20th District and joined Sanon-Jules, who declared her candidacy in April.
