Every generation has a responsibility to shape the future it hopes to inherit. That responsibility requires vision, courage, and a willingness to participate in the moments that define our communities.
During a recent trip to California, I was introduced to the symbolism of the Year of the Fire Horse and its connection to renewal, transformation, and forward movement. Traditionally associated with energy, courage, independence, and action, the Fire Horse represents the belief that progress requires people who are willing to step forward, embrace change, and help shape what comes next.
That message resonated deeply because it reflects the work we do every day at the Urban League of Broward County. Communities do not move forward because of the efforts of one person or one organization. Progress happens when individuals engage, leaders serve, and generations build upon the foundation created before them.
One of the most powerful ways we shape our future is through civic participation.
Our communities continue to navigate important challenges, including economic opportunity, affordable housing, education, healthcare, and workforce development. The decisions made by elected officials impact our daily lives and the future of our families and neighborhoods. That is why every eligible voter has a responsibility to stay informed, participate in the democratic process, and make their voice heard.
On Tuesday, August 18, voters across Florida will participate in the Primary Election. Primary elections play a critical role in determining who will move forward to represent our communities, yet they often receive less participation than general elections. Every vote matters, and every voice can influence the direction of our neighborhoods, our county, and our state.
At the Urban League, we take our role as a trusted community convener seriously. We are committed to creating opportunities for education, dialogue, and engagement that empower residents to make informed decisions. That is why we recently hosted a Congressional District 20 Candidate Forum, bringing community members together to hear directly from those seeking to represent them and to engage in meaningful conversations about the issues that matter most.
Preparing our community for the future also means investing in the next generation of leaders. Through our Young Professionals Network, we provide opportunities for emerging leaders to connect, grow professionally, serve their communities, and become active participants in civic life. Leadership is not defined solely by titles or elected positions. It begins with showing up, staying informed, volunteering, advocating, and recognizing that each of us has a role in strengthening our community.
This same commitment is reflected in our Leaders Under 40 honorees, a remarkable group of professionals who represent the promise and potential of tomorrow’s leadership. They are entrepreneurs, educators, community advocates, innovators, and change-makers who are already creating impact. They remind us that leadership is not defined by age, but by purpose, service, and the willingness to create solutions.
