Op-Ed: From celebration to advocacy

For more than 22 years, I have proudly said one thing about my role at M•I•A Media Group: I am not a journalist—I am a businessman. I built this company with a simple but powerful mission: to tell the stories that others overlooked and to celebrate the success, excellence, and achievements of Black people throughout South Florida.

I have always entrusted the editorial direction of our publications, television programs, website, and digital platforms to our editorial team. They are the journalists. They report the news, verify the facts, and uphold the highest standards of responsible journalism. My responsibility has been to build a media company that gives our community a voice.

Today, however, I believe that responsibility must evolve.

The challenges facing our community are simply too significant for me to remain solely behind the scenes. I can no longer separate my role as a businessman from my responsibility to speak for our community. The time has come for me to step forward—not to replace our journalists, but to stand beside them.

I am becoming a newsman.

One of the defining moments in this journey came during a recent conversation with my good friend, Bill Diggs. As I shared with him how my thinking had evolved and why I believed M•I•A Media Group needed to broaden its editorial mission, he paused and simply said, “Dexter, you’re becoming a newsman.”

His words resonated with me because they captured exactly what has been happening. It wasn’t about changing my role; it was about accepting a greater responsibility to the community we have proudly served for more than two decades.

Bill then said something that has remained with me: “The community needs a consistent media voice that can be trusted and respected.”

He was absolutely right.

For years, our mission has been to editorialize the success and achievements of our community. We have proudly recognized entrepreneurs, educators, healthcare professionals, executives, nonprofit leaders, elected officials, and everyday citizens who are making a difference throughout South Florida. That mission will never change because positive stories matter. Representation matters. Excellence deserves to be celebrated.

But celebration alone is no longer enough.

Every day, families are struggling with the rising cost of housing. Small businesses are fighting to survive in an uncertain economy. Workers are searching for better-paying jobs. Healthcare remains out of reach for too many families. Immigration policies continue to create uncertainty for thousands of hardworking people who call South Florida home. These are not political issues—they are community issues. They deserve thoughtful, factual, and consistent coverage from a media organization that understands the people it serves.

That is why M•I•A Media Group is entering a new chapter.

We will continue to celebrate Black excellence, but we will also become an even stronger voice for the issues shaping the future of our community. We will examine economic development, job creation, affordable housing, healthcare, education, public safety, immigration, and the policies that directly affect the quality of life in our neighborhoods. We will ask tough questions, demand accountability from those in positions of power regardless of political party, and provide balanced, responsible journalism that informs rather than inflames.

Being a mouthpiece for our community does not mean speaking for everyone. It means making sure our community is heard. It means listening to our residents, elevating diverse voices, challenging systems when necessary, and highlighting solutions that move us forward.

Trust is earned through fairness, consistency, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the truth. Respect is earned by reporting not only our victories but also the challenges we must overcome together. This is not a departure from our mission. It is the natural evolution of it.

As CEO & Publisher of M•I•A Media Group, I believe my greatest responsibility is no longer just to document the success of our community, but to help shape its future. Our readers deserve a media organization that celebrates their accomplishments while fearlessly addressing the issues that affect their daily lives.

The time has come for M•I•A Media Group to be more than a storyteller. We must become a trusted advocate, a credible source of news, and a respected voice for the people we serve.

That is why I am becoming a newsman.
