Emmy-nominated wardrobe stylist Ashley Michelle Miller utilizes fashion as both a form of activism and art, transforming style into a bold language of empowerment and self-expression. M•I•A connected with Ashley to share her insights and personal playbook on all things Art Basel style.
Art Basel brings together so many creative disciplines. How do you envision fashion and art intersecting, particularly during Art Basel?
Fashion is art. They’re simply different expressions of the same creative source.
I remember hearing a designer say that he often goes to museums before designing a new collection. He studies paintings, textures, sculptures, everything. And those moments in front of a piece of art inspire the colors in his garments, the way he cuts a silhouette, the fabrics he chooses, the graphics, the embroidery.
And it works the other way around, too. Artists are constantly observing what people we wear, how they move and how they present themselves. They pull from style, identity, culture and everyday expression to create their art. Whether it’s fashion, home décor, fine art, or style, it all begins with a thought, becomes a creation and turns into an expression.
What trends do you predict will dominate at Art Basel this year?
One thing about Art Basel is that people are going to express themselves boldly. And this year, I’m predicting color and revival trends that really reflect where we are culturally and creatively.
First, color.
Bold, bright, neon, jewel tones all of it. Those saturated, expressive colors translate beautifully into style. Color holds energy, emotion and intention, and I think people are craving that.
Second, a revival of workwear… but deconstructed.
Suiting and structured workwear is making a return, with a twist. I think we’ll see rebellion. Deconstruction. People reworking suits, tailoring, trousers. Transforming old norms into new expressions.
What are your go-to essentials for surviving Art Basel in style?
From sunrise gallery shows to late-night parties, versatility is my number one essential for surviving Art Basel in style.
First essential: versatile looks.
I love building a look that can transition from day to night with just a few adjustments.
Second essential: multiple shoe options (always in the car).
Shoes are the quickest way to shift a vibe.
Third essential: accessories. My forever game changers.
Accessories are how you transform an outfit without changing the outfit.
What are your suggestions for defining a signature style and elevating it for Art Basel?
My whole framework and honestly, the way I believe people should live is Discover, Love, Express your “I AMM” every single day. That’s the foundation of signature style.
• What colors pull you in?
• What shapes or silhouettes speak to you?
• What textures or moods show up in their work?
Beyond supporting artists, Basel is about celebrating expression. Celebrate yours.
The biggest suggestion I can give anyone is: define your signature style by leading with your heart. Wear what feels aligned with you. Wear what excites you. Wear what feels like your I AMM. When you dress from that place, you automatically become a talking point. People notice. People connect. You enjoy yourself more because you’re grounded in who you are.
Describe your Art Basel 2025 style and mood in three words.
