The daughter of a single mother who gave birth at 15 to her and her twin sister Sidra, actress and director Tasha Smith grew up around gangs, drugs and poverty in Camden, N.J., a city that one time was named the murder capital of the nation. “I’ve been to the worst place I could ever be,” she says to PEOPLE, “but I always had a dream—I knew I was going to go to Hollywood and be legit.” She’s telling her story now, she explains, to help encourage others. “Your dream,” she says, “is the best thing you’ve got.”
The Tasha Smith many of us know now is the beautiful, outspoken, never-holding-anything-back, “keeping it real”, sexy woman who usually steals the scenes she is in. Usually playing no-nonsense characters that tell it “like it is” is something that Tasha had learned first hand.
There wasn’t much else for her in 1970s Camden. Smith’s mother was addicted to drugs throughout much of Tasha’s childhood; while braiding neighbors’ hair for pocket money, young Tasha would imagine she was Chaka Khan. By 14 she was “going to the bar with my boyfriend, smoking cigarettes and ordering Hennessy. But I knew I wasn’t going to sell drugs and have five kids with five different men.”
Smith escaped to the west coast with the help of some friends who sent her a plane ticket. The high school dropout stayed with friends, estranged family members–anyone who would take her in. She only had been in L.A. for just about a year when she saw comedian Martin Lawrence at the Comedy Act Theater. Hooked, she developed her own “angry, X-rated” stand-up routine and started landing gigs, eventually appearing on stage with comics like Dave Chappelle.
“I loved the performing,” she says. But it wasn’t making ends meet, so she started secretly stripping to add extra money to her pocket. Then one morning in 1997 she faced the truth.
“I was sick of myself. I was doing weed every day and drinking. I hated the way cocaine made me feel, trying to go to sleep after being up for days.” Frightened and depressed, she found help in religion, becoming a Christian.
Tasha says it was discovering God’s love that helped her overcome her past and realize who she really is.
“His love helped me become a different person, taking me from that life as a stripper to a new life as a woman who prayed and found the courage to get up on stage and do the work she truly loved,” she says.
Quitting stripping and the club scene got her head clear; classes with drama teacher Ivana Chubbuck helped convince her “I wasn’t as ugly as I thought inside,” says Smith, who now teaches classes for her mentor. Acting jobs followed in the shows Boston Common and HBO’s The Corner. Filmmaker Tyler Perry, who met Smith through mutual friend Tyra Banks, cast her in his comedy Daddy’s Little Girls, released earlier this year. “Tasha brings all her pain to her roles,” says Perry. “She has taken her rough past and made it her art.”
And the rest is history as they say.
Smith’s mom now has over 30 years of sobriety her sister is a successful mom. “This is the American Dream,” says Smith. “It’s all possible.”
Tasha’s Twin Sister Sidra is a Bonus for Both
Tasha is the founder of the Tasha Smith Actors Workshop (TSAW) and her sister is a producer and director.
Sidra produced 2012’s Free Angela and All Political Prisoners documentary. She also produced, wrote and directed the 1999 movie A Luv Tale and created the A Luv Tale series, which debuted in 2021. She also worked as a casting associate on 2003 movie Daredevil, the TV series The Wonderful World of Disney in 2003 and TV movie Master Spy: The Robert Hanssen Story in 2002.
Described as a “no-holds-barred, multi-level, acting school,” on the school’s account on X (formerly Twitter), TSAW offers group classes online, as well as private coaching and private acting lessons.
“Using my platform at TSAW has helped nurture me as a director,” Tasha previously told Essence.
“The almost 20 years I’ve been teaching acting and my master class has given me an opportunity to work through scenes to create characters, to work on blocking, to get me comfortable with directing actors,” she explained to the outlet. “I really am grateful for my school TSAW because I get a chance to do what I’ve been cultivating for so many years and put visuals on it. It’s a blessing and an obsession. I am having the time of my life!”
Speaking to Bevy Smith, the host of Bevelations on Radio Andy, in 2021, Sidra admitted that it’s not only a “bonus” having a twin sister in the business, but “just having a twin. Period.”
“Because this twin thing is real,” she explained. “Like when you think about the energy that two people who look just alike have just when they’re together or when they’re on two different sides of the earth, or even in the same business that we are in, it just makes it all more strong, more powerful, more dynamic.”
Sidra pointed out that she and Tasha have each other’s backs. “We fight just like any other sibling, but to have her is a blessing,” she said, later adding, “It’s been a blessing from the day we were born, for real.”
