New wage data shows Black women are losing ground even as broader measures suggest progress across the U.S. economy overall.

The economy can look like it’s moving in the right direction– until you look more closely. New data from the National Women’s Law Center shows that while the overall wage gap for women narrowed in 2025, the gap for Black women working full-time, year-round widened. Those numbers deserve attention– not just from Black women or women, but from anyone who cares about the economic health of the U.S.

According to the National Women’s Law Center, Black women working full-time, year-round earned 64 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men in 2025. That gap widened from 65 cents in 2024 and 69 cents in 2022.

Most notably, the overall wage gap for women narrowed, while Black women were the only group of women highlighted in the analysis whose gap widened.
