MacKenzie Scott has donated more than $1 billion to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), making her one of the most significant private donors to HBCUs in modern history. But before Scott became known for giving away billions of dollars, she was a young Princeton University writer whose life was profoundly shaped by one of America’s greatest literary icons: Toni Morrison.

Scott studied creative writing at Princeton, where Morrison became her professor, mentor and thesis adviser, according to the university. Their relationship extended well beyond the classroom. Morrison read Scott’s writing, encouraged her literary ambitions and remained a source of guidance after Scott graduated.
