We spoke to Black women at ESSENCE Festival who attended with their friends to hear why the annual event is like no other.

For thousands of Black women, ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans is not just a weekend on the calendar. It is a reunion, a celebration, and for many, an annual rite of summer that only gets sweeter with each return trip. Kimberly Kelsely Johnson enjoyed her first ESSENCE festival this year, and the experience has clearly left an impression. “This is my first year, and I have enjoyed it,” she says, showcasing the excitement so many newcomers feel once they step into the fold.
