About Oliver Gilbert

Oliver Gilbert III is the Miami-Dade County Commission for District 1, and the former two-term Mayor of Miami Gardens. Born and raised in Miami Gardens, he attended Parkview Elementary, Parkway Middle, and Miami Norland Senior High School before earning his undergraduate degree at Florida A&M University and his law degree at the University of Miami School of Law.

Elected to the Miami Gardens City Council in 2008 and as Mayor in 2012, Gilbert led the city for eight years — focusing on safer neighborhoods, expanded parks, economic growth, and community policing that builds trust. In 2020, Miami Gardens was named an All-America City for the first time in its history.

On the County Commission, Gilbert has led efforts to expand rapid transit along Miami-Dade’s busiest corridors — including the plan to bring rapid mass transit north toward Miami Gardens, Aventura, and ultimately Broward County — paired with investments in affordable housing in the neighborhoods that need it most. He helped secure more than $20 million for the Miami Gardens Performing Arts Center, now preparing to break ground.

A husband, father and lifelong resident of the community he seeks to represent, Gilbert is running for Congress to put working families first.
