If there ever was a time and a need for leadership, it is now. As the dismantling of democracy is taking place, the silence of complicity roars louder than the falls of Niagara, right before our very eyes. Those who have chosen to drink the Kool-Aid of bigotry and injustice scream loud, justifying the burning of the constitution of the United States of America.
The malignancy that spreads unchecked and unbridled speaks to the state of our nation. A nation divided calls for leadership that is unafraid, leadership that is selfless, leadership that is driven by that which is good for all and not only for the chosen few. Leadership that is bound to the sanctity of human passion and compassion. Leadership that begins with asking, “How can I be of service, while also asking, “How can I help you become a better you?” Leadership that begins with assisting others while inquiring, “What do you need to be successful?” Leadership that does not cast blame. Leadership that embraces the differences in each one of us, and the differences that make us stronger from the experiences that we all bring to the table.
As we salute the Most Powerful and Influential Black Business Leaders, I charge you to look deep into your soul. Have you become too big to sweep the floor? Are you so entitled that it is beneath you to take out the trash? If so, it is time to check yourself. Your Ph.D., your double master’s, your Doctorate in Divinity, that has assisted you in becoming the orator of our time, is for not, if you have risen to a place of aristocracy.
Yes, you have risen and you have proven your worth, but as you are being celebrated, I ask that you look deep into the wells of time. Look deep into the roads that you have traveled, and look back to those who paved the way. Look back to the days that were tough, the days that were hard, and the days that you did not think you would make it. For these are the days that we are in now. These are the days that we must stand up, speak up, and be the leader that God has intended for you to be.
Leadership is not given. Leadership is earned. Leadership does not bow down to mediocrity. Leadership looks for the best in everyone.
Are you an empowering leader?
