More than media: Empowering and inspiring change

By Tony C. Lesesne

The United States of America is indeed a resilient nation. It is proud, yet vulnerable to not only outside forces, but to itself in a uniquely destructive way. Black owned media has a legacy of strong patriotism in its consistent effort to elevate and inspire in the face of adversity and struggle. It’s time again for a new era that can help make positive transformation across the land, if only it is leveraged properly.

As the digital landscape evolves, and media becomes a primary artery for information, it is vital – more than ever – to embrace Black-owned media as a cornerstone of empowerment and progress. This is a playbook for success moving forward. Here’s a breakdown of its key roles.

Countering mainstream narratives

Black-owned media stands as a powerful voice offering crucial counter-narratives to mainstream portrayals of Black communities which can often be tainted by negativity and stereotypes. It is a vital sanctuary where Black individuals can author their own stories and frame issues through their authentic lens. With insightful depth, it delves into the rich complexities and nuanced realities of the  Black experience, fearlessly addressing a spectrum of cultural, social, economic, and political matters that might be simplified or rendered invisible by mainstream outlets. The power of Black journalists and media creators lies in their profound understanding of the issues facing their own communities. This intrinsic connection imbues their reporting and storytelling with unparalleled authenticity and profound empathy.

Addressing critical issues and advocating for change

Black-owned media remains unwavering in its dedication to addressing inequality across critical domains such as criminal justice, education, housing, employment, and healthcare. Scholarly research consistently demonstrates their more extensive coverage when compared to mainstream media. With a legacy deeply intertwined with transformative social and political movements, Black-owned media serves as a catalyst for powerful advocacy and holding institutions accountable for their actions. It also acts as a sacred keeper of Black history, preserving invaluable cultural memory while simultaneously illuminating the remarkable progress achieved and underscoring the essential work that remains.

How should Black Americans leverage Black-owned media in this new reality?

Given the current climate Black Americans should strategically leverage Black-owned media in several key ways. Participate in online communities and discussions to connect with others. Utilize your own social media networks to highlight stories of resilience, innovation, and successful initiatives within the Black community. Black media often highlights opportunities for community organizing, and political engagement. Pay attention and participate where possible. Support Black-owned media outlets through subscriptions, donations, or patronage. If you own a business, consider advertising with Black-owned media to reach your target audience and support the Black business ecosystem. Encourage others including institutions and corporations to advertise and partner with Black-owned media as well.

Actively supporting and strategically investing in Black-owned media is not merely an option, but a crucial imperative in our collective journey towards fostering a more equitable and just society for all.
