As I reflect on the recent 19th annual Women of Power Summit hosted by Black Enterprise, I am reminded of the profound impact that true empowerment can have on individuals, communities, and society as a whole. The March summit brought together more than 1,800 women, each with personal stories and aspirations, to share in a collective experience of inspiration and motivation.
Robin Washington, president and chief financial officer of Salesforce, drove this point home with her powerful keynote address. She pointed out that women often feel compelled to constantly sell themselves, highlighting their resumes and credentials, just to gain opportunities. But, as she so aptly put it, “You are a buyer too!” This statement resonated deeply with me. It is a reminder that we, as women leaders, have the power to choose the workplaces and environments that value and appreciate our worth.
When we find ourselves in spaces where our value is seen, appreciated, and rewarded, we transition from justifying our own worth to expressing our true values. We are no longer burdened by the need to prove our worth. Instead, we are free to share our stories, passions, and visions. To me, this is the essence of empowerment.
As women leaders, we have a unique opportunity to create a ripple effect of positive change in our communities. When we thrive, entire communities rise with us. Our leadership, compassion, and vision unlock the potential of those around us, proving that power is more than holding a position, it’s about making a difference.
At Florida Blue, our mission is to help people and communities achieve better health. We believe everyone deserves access to quality health care in order to reach their greatest potential. By breaking down barriers and helping more people get better health care, we are enabling individuals and families to take control of their health and wellbeing.
I urge my fellow women leaders to remember that inspiring and developing others is our greatest leadership impact. Let us choose to occupy spaces where our value is seen and appreciated, and where everyone feels welcome and valued. Let us share our stories, passions, and visions with the world. And let us continue to pave the way for greater opportunity, inspiring future generations of women leaders to do the same.
Together, we can create a brighter, more empowered future for ourselves, our communities, and the world at large.
