Cellphones may be out, but laptops are back in at Broward County schools.
The school district plans to issue every student a laptop computer when they return to school on Aug. 11. They’ll be able to use them to do work at school and at home.
“I’m excited for the opportunities that take-home devices will bring for our students,” said Landyn Spellberg, a junior at Western High in Davie and the student liaison to the Broward School Board. “I believe this will eliminate the current digital divide some students face and ensure that all students can reach their highest potential.”
The district also plans to work with internet providers to ensure low-income families are able to get free or low-cost internet service at home.
The district last issued student laptops to students during the pandemic when learning went remote. Most Broward students kept the devices until at-home learning ended at the end of the 2020-21 school year. The district hasn’t issued laptops for students to take home since.
