A power struggle over who should manage a foundation tasked with raising money for Broward College has resulted in the forced removal of one foundation member, the resignations of several others and the appointments of seven new members.
The college’s Board of Trustees has taken more control of the Broward College Foundation, saying it’s necessary to provide proper oversight to an organization hampered by poor budgeting, paperwork and fundraising.
Some critics see the college’s action as a hostile political takeover, akin to efforts made by Gov. Ron DeSantis in recent years to reshape higher education institutions to become more conservative.
“This is about the hijacking of our institutions to impose a dangerous agenda, one that dismantles academic freedom, silences diverse perspectives and leaves staff and students in fear,” Josh Kaufman, a field organizer for the American Civil Liberties Union, told the Board of Trustees at a meeting Tuesday. “We’re not going to stand by and let Broward College become a pawn in this political and divisive chess game. Our community deserves better.”
