As an urban lifestyle specialist and global real estate advisor, I pride myself in knowing where to go and what to do and that includes dining. I am considered a gourmand, which really is a derivative of the medieval word “glutton.” On occasion, I can be that too. Many of you may recall that I co-hosted an internet and radio food talk-show with the late Nancy Ancrum, “Join Us at the Table” where “Breaking bread breaks down barriers.” Well, today, that’s all you hear. It’s all about food and culture! And Miami is the perfect place to explore.
And please don’t assume the eating out I refer to is high-end. Yes, I can offer plenty of those, but one must have an array of places to go, to fit all budgets, including my own.
Let’s see what was on my plate these past few weeks:
My latest find is a killer bakery in Midtown. Marie Blachère Bakery & Café that has the best croissant sandwiches EVER! Get the smoked salmon, avocado and lettuce. It melts in your mouth (including all the crumbs.) At $6.50 that’s what I call cheap eats!
If you want an amazing James Beard experience, visit Chef Valerie Chang’s Maty’s. It’s a contemporary Peruvian restaurant that’s a little on the pricier side. My favorite dish? Roasted Dorade with aji Amarillo beurre blanc and chives.
Head to Chef Creole if you want some home-style cooked whole fried fish. I like the outdoor seating when the weather is right. I love his Pikliz and it’s a very cost effective meal. The fish is huge. I have ordered three and served 11 or 12.
I am so excited! I just heard Chef Akino West is now the head rooster at Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster in Overtown! I laid back for a while but now it is time to go back. Considered pricey by most, including me.
For the best taco visit Uptown 66. In 2023, it won Good Morning America’s “Ultimate Taco Spot.” My favorite is the barbacoa taco filled with oxtail, beef cheek, short rib and pickled onions for six bucks. Add their Mexican street corn for a dollar more.
My absolute favorite hi-end spot right now is Brickell’s Zeru! Considered authentic Spanish food, their Basque cuisine is sure to either elevate your taste buds or knock your socks off! I’m in love with their Dover Sole, but their Turbot is a delectable fish dish, large enough to serve four.
On my must do list is The Last Carrot! in Coconut Grove. As a frequent diner for over 15 years, I watched Erin (the founder’s daughter, now owner) grow up. Now I am watching her son go off to college. Order their killer pita as a salad for $14.
