Tuesday, May 20, was a day of celebration, pride, and purpose as School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon III hosted the District 1 “Student of the Year Awards Luncheon,” which recognized the extraordinary accomplishments of students across District 1. Held at St. Thomas University, the event brought together students, families, educators, and community leaders for an inspiring afternoon honoring academic achievement, leadership, and character.
With nearly 50,000 students in District 1, the award recipients represent the very best of what public education has to offer. The honorees have demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also responsibility, integrity, and a strong commitment to their communities — serving as a shining example for their peers.

Each “Student of the Year” honoree received a trophy and certificate in recognition of their achievements. Additionally, winners of the District 1 Essay Contest were awarded a $100 gift card and a $100 cash prize personally gifted by Dr. Gallon, further reinforcing his commitment to uplifting and investing in student success.

“It has been a great time celebrating and honoring our students at the District 1 Student of the Year Awards Luncheon,” Gallon said. “Of the nearly 50,000 students in District 1, these students represent the epitome of academic excellence, responsibility, character, and promise. It has been an amazing year recognizing students and their families each month—something I have done consistently for the past eight years.”

The success of the event was made possible by the unwavering support of District 1 school principals, teachers, faculty, staff, and regional and district administrators.

Special thanks were extended to St. Thomas University for generously hosting the ceremony, and to community partners who continue to champion educational excellence, including Commissioner Joseph Kelly of Opa-Locka, Councilwoman Katrina Baskin of Miami Gardens, Pastor Felix of Bethel Evangelical Baptist Church, and the Miami Dolphins Organization.
